Things you need to know about magnetic stripe

There are 4 different types of magnetic stripes.

Loco: 300 Oe (350 Oe), 600 Oe (650 Oe)
Hico: 2750 Oe, 4000 Oe

And 2 types of encoders for magnetic stripe cards.
One just can only encode Loco cards, the other one can encode both Hico and Loco magnetic cards.

There are many multiple colors of magnetic stripe available, such as black, brown, gold, silver, green, blue, red, etc. (we use black in default.) We use magnetic stripe card reader to read out the data.

Track of Magnetic Stripe

The width of the track has 3 types as follow:

1 Track (6.35mm)
2 Tracks (8.4mm)
3 Tracks (12.7mm, default option)

3 tracks encoding supports of magnetic stripe as follow:

Track 1: available for 79 numbers and Arabic alphabet maximum
Track 2: available for 40 numbers only
Track 3: available for 107 numbers and Arabic alphabet maximum

P.S.:
1) The data is encoded into track 2 if you have no request.
2) Data encoded in track 1 will be added with “%” automatically, it can’t be erased.

Left: CR80 size, Available for all 4 types of magnetic stripes (300 Oe, 600 Oe, 2750 Oe, 4000 Oe);

Right: CR50 size, available for 650 Oe only.

Common problems about magnetic stripe card

What might cause magnetic stripe card not working?

Thickness

The regular thickness of magnetic stripe card is 0.76 ± 0.02mm, too thin or too thick could both cause the magnetic card not working properly.

Position

The regular distance from magnetic stripe to card edge is 4-4.5mm, wrong position of the magnetic stripe could cause the magnetic card not working well.

Swipe

When we swipe the magnetic stripe card, our swipe angle or swipe speed will affect reading. Magnetic stripe cards should be upright and swipe at a slower speed.

Degaussing

Don’t place the magnetic stripe card in an environment with a strong magnetic field, and even do not stack multiple magnetic stripe cards together for a long time .
